Buying wool for more than 50 years
Elco Direct is one of the largest wool buyers in New Zealand. Established more than 50 years ago, the company has a team of buyers based in Cambridge, Taumarunui, Raetihi and Taihape. The company's head office is in Cambridge.
The company is a fully owned subsidiary of Cavalier Corporation. Among the group companies are well known broadloom carpet brands Cavalier Bremworth and Norman Ellison Carpets. These carpet makers are serviced by a world-class wool scour - Cavalier Woolscourers - in which Cavalier has a 50% stake. Two spinning plants at Napier and Wanganui are also owned by the corporation and provide yarn for the carpet-making businesses.
And if you're wondering about the name Elco? It comes from E. Lichtenstein and Co which was a merchant wool scourer in the 1990s. When Cavalier Corporation bought the private wool buying firms of Des Davis Ltd and Mannell & Follick Ltd in 1995 to provide the merchant wool scouring business with wool, the name Elco Direct was coined to give these two wool buying firms some connnection to that wool business. With the closure of the merchant wool scouring business in 2000, Elco Direct now services the corporation's broadloom carpet business and New Zealand's wool exporters at large.
